History of Bibione: historical events that occurred in Bibione

The history of Bibione, like many other towns in beautiful Italy, is an ancient and eventful history. Its fate links it inevitably to sea and water: a wetland from its origins, the Romans were the first to discover its potential, picking it among many already in the early centuries AD. They reclaimed the territory and shared with the town, although not always peacefully, language, traditions, and inevitably costumes, which still today are present in Bibione. Once faded the Roman Empire, its strategic position was grasped by the Serenissima, the great maritime republic that was talked about in all Europe, Venice. Again, Bibione was part of a great empire, at the fall of which it began to experience centuries of degradation and neglect when the wetlands won out and recovered those territories that once belonged to them.

Bibione and the first hospitality structures

Seasonally, it was frequented by fishermen who found along its coast and lagoon good fishing opportunities. But Bibione had to wait until the XIX century to be talked about again. Small private entrepreneurs decided to rehabilitate the land, and already in the 1930s, a good 10,000 hectares of land were reclaimed and inhabited again. Now polished like an old coin, Bibione has taken again to shining, revealing a remarkable potential. The first to exploit it were the hotelkeepers of the 1950s, to whose initiative is due the building of the first accommodations, while in the same years a promotion for the healing powers of the water flowing underground Bibione started.
